I love connecting with inspirational women for my blog section ‘Keeping up with Reality’ because it’s so interesting to hear about their incredible stories but also to give you a motivational beauty boost.
When Kim Carillo, agreed to be on the blog I was super-excited as I have come across Kim’s articles in various publications and always admired her writing and also how glamorous she looks! She literally is the poster-girl for over 60s.
Anyway, let’s dive straight in…here’s what the lovely Kim has to tell us about herself along with some insider skincare tips and product recommendations that are a definite must-try.
Can you tell us your full name / title?
Hi everyone! I’m Kim Carillo and I’m an international TV producer and journalist and the founder of www.kimcarillo.com where I work with women of fifty-plus helping them share their stories and inspire others. I am also CEO of Love The Lens, an upcoming online course I’ve created to help female entrepreneurs look and feel confident on camera and explode their brand. After all, if the Kardashians can do it then so can you! On a personal level… I am a Brit married to a New Yorker. I have two grown kids, one stepson, an amazing three-year-old grandson and an accident-prone lab called Bailey. In “normal” times we are based in the UK but travel to NY regularly to see our family.
Can you tell us a bit about yourself/career?
I began my career forty years ago (yep I am ancient!) at the BBC in London working for Sir Michael Parkinson who, at that time, was the UK’s most successful TV talk show host. During the course of his career, he interviewed over 2,000 of the world’s biggest celebrities both in London and also in Australia where I travelled with him to produce the show from Sydney every year. I went on to set up my own TV production company in London working as the London HQ for some of America’s highest rating and most successful TV shows, including Inside Edition and Extra! I have also written hundreds of features for women’s magazines and national newspapers including The Daily Mail.
What have been your career highlights?
It was a very exciting time building my TV company. I started out producing/reporting one story every month for Inside Edition and over the course of a year, I built that to a point where we were shooting two or three stories a day out of London and feeding them via satellite for day of air. It could be stressful but so rewarding and I loved the challenge! But in terms of highlights, I would have to include working with women from all over the world helping them share their stories both in print and on TV.
What advice would you give to women over 50 to help them feel beauty confident?
Ageing is tough on us girls! Somehow, the men are considered “distinguished” while we have so much pressure put on us to look good/look young…especially in my business. Personally, I believe that the key to beauty confidence is investing in your health. Work from the inside out. A healthy body and mind brings vitality and inner confidence and that is very attractive. Humour is vital to keep you young at heart! Once that’s all sorted a natural make up that makes you look like the best version of you is the way to go!
There is a myth that ‘after a certain age’ you can’t wear glitter eyeshadow or a bold lip. What do you think of these so-called ‘rules’?
At this point in our lives I think most of us have figured out what works best for us make up wise. I personally find that less is more as I have grown older but if I was headed to a Christmas party and glitter eye shadow was the look of the season then why not give it a try? It’s all about balance. Make the eyes or the lips the star of the night…not both. The key is that whatever you go for, wear it with confidence and you can’t go wrong!
What are your favourite skincare products and why?
When I hit sixty I basically dried up! I don’t go for really expensive skin care but I am methodical about always taking my make up off no matter what! I use Olay Regenerist 3 Point Firming Serum, day cream and night cream because I love and need the richness these days. It works for me and is affordable. Recently I discovered Charlotte Tilbury’s Magic Cream and I LOVE it. I apply before using my foundation and it makes my skin look so healthy and plumped up. I’m addicted! After a workout, I love showering with Clarins Eau Dynamisante Shower Gel and Body Lotion. The scent is so fresh and invigorating and sets me up for a productive day of writing! Oh and in these days of Covid when hand washing is a second career I am stocked up with my Aveda hand relief cream. I love the fresh lemon scent.
Do you have any insider skincare tips?
One of my tips for “lifting” your face is to emphasise your eyebrows. It sounds so obvious but it makes such a huge difference. I started filling in my brows with a lovely soft brown Laura Mercier Pencil after a pro make up artist worked with me on a shoot. She showed me what a difference it made and I wondered why I hadn’t done it years ago! If you haven’t tried already then give it a shot.
There have been many challenges during COVID what advice/motivation can you give?
This has been such a stressful time for all of us living through the Covid pandemic. It’s easy to turn to the vino (and believe me I did!) But ultimately it just makes everything worse. Exercise of any sort is the antidote to the emotional anxiety and stress this disease is creating and getting out into nature as much as possible. I recently went horse-riding again for the first time in 20 years and it was a fantastic experience! Frankly, I was relieved I could still get onto a horse! I’m not sure I would have done that had I not been in Lockdown for so long. My husband and I have just bought bikes too and head off every morning for a spin through the park before work. The pandemic is teaching us to reevaluate our lives and think outside of the box about what really counts in this world. I set up my website during lockdown in an attempt to hang on to what remained of my sanity but, as it turns out, it became so much more and I have met some amazing and inspiring women. I think that however dark things are, there are always silver linings if we just allow ourselves to see them. Maybe this is the perfect time for you to launch that business you’ve always dreamed of or pull back on work and focus more on your health or family. I encourage any women reading this to think about what would really make them happy and then go for it because…if not now, then when? We are all rooting for you!
Complete the sentence…
A woman is her most confident when she believes in her relevance and value on every level oh…and when she’s just had a blow-dry obviously!
